I’m not exaggerating when I say I’d travel to Amman just for a taste of Kunafa from Kunafa Habiba. After living in the Middle East for over seven years and sampling Kunafa from countless places, I can confidently say that this is hands-down the best I’ve ever tried. It is something that you absolutely cannot miss while in Jordan!
What is Kunafa?
Kunafa, a Middle Eastern dessert, is a delightful concoction of mild cheese and shredded or ground phyllo pastry. Slowly roasted over a fire until the cheese melts and the pastry turns crispy, it’s then drenched in sweet sugar syrup. Despite its unconventional ingredients, Kunafa is undeniably one of the most divine desserts out there.
Where Can I find the Best Kunafa?
The best kunafa ever can be found at Kunafa Habiba in Downtown Jordan. It is located here. It is in a tiny alleyway, and you will notice from the line that stretches out the door. This place is so popular that there is always a line!
How to Order at Kunafa Habiba.
. To place your order, simply join the line (which moves surprisingly fast!). Once at the front, head to the booth to choose from their two main types of Kunafa, sold by the kilogram: Kunafa Na’amameh (smooth) and Kunafa Khishnah (rough). While both are delicious, I have a slight preference for Kunafa Khishnah, made with shredded phyllo dough.
You order by the kilo at the cashier, which is located at the front of the line, right outside of the serving area. Once you’ve ordered, he will give you a receipt.
- For a half kilo say nus kilo ____ (So for example, for a half kilo of rough Kunafa, I would say nus kilo kunafa kishnah)
- The smallest amount you can buy is a quarter kilogram (250 grams). To order say ruba’a kilo _____. (For a quarter kilo of soft kunafa, you would say ruba’a kilo kunafa na’amameh)
Then, you’ll take your ticket and proceed inside the small serving area. Give your ticket to the men serving the kunafa. They will hand you back your hot Kunafa.
Behind the building, you’ll find an open air area where you can enjoy your kunafa. There is little seating, but you can sit on one of the many stairs or ledges in the area.
What to do After eating at Kunafa Habiba
If you’re in the mood for lunch, I highly recommend swinging by the nearby street food joint, Hasham. They serve some of the best falafel and hummus in all of Amman—a perfect complement to your Kunafa indulgence!
There are also so many nearby sites, such as the nearby Roman Amphiter and the Amman Souk.
